Common questions about using Rosetta.

Getting started

How do I translate a screenshot?

Take a screenshot in any app — chat, menu, news article, manga. Open Rosetta and the translation is already done. Translation chips appear over the original text, exactly where you were reading.

How do I set up Back Tap to translate?

Open iOS Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap and scroll down to Shortcuts — pick the Rosetta shortcut. Then double-tapping the back of your iPhone captures a screenshot and opens it in Rosetta automatically.

What languages does Rosetta support?

30+ languages, including Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), English, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Turkish, Polish, Dutch, and Ukrainian.

Privacy & data

Does Rosetta read all my photos?

No. Rosetta only looks at your screenshots. Other photos in your library are never read. You can revoke photo access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → Rosetta.

Is my data sent to a server?

By default, no. Rosetta uses Apple's on-device translation framework. Translations stay on your phone. The only exception is the optional Cloud mode — and only if you enable it and provide your own AI provider API key.

See the full privacy policy for details.

How do I auto-delete screenshots after translating?

In Rosetta → Settings → Privacy, turn on Auto-delete screenshots after translating. After a translation completes, the source screenshot is moved to your Recently Deleted album.

Troubleshooting

The translation didn't appear — what should I do?

1. Make sure you've granted Photos access (iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → Rosetta → Full Access).

2. Check that the screenshot actually contains text — Rosetta needs OCR-readable characters.

3. Try opening the screenshot manually from Library inside Rosetta.

If it still doesn't work, use Settings → Help & feedback → Report a bug — we read every report.

Pinyin isn't showing for Chinese text

Open the translated screenshot, tap the Aa button at the top, and toggle Pinyin on. Pinyin only displays for Simplified and Traditional Chinese sources.

Can I use Rosetta offline?

Yes. The default on-device translation works without internet. The first time you use a new language pair, iOS may prompt you to download the language model — that one download requires a connection.

Still need help?

Open Rosetta → Settings → Help & feedback → Report a bug or Send feedback. We read every message.
